Warner Brothers has apparently decided that "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and hence has
announced that it will
distribute movies via the Bit Torrent P2P service at the same time as they are released on DVD.

Those of us outside the US will have to wait a bit since this is a US only deal at present, however I have no doubt that if it is successful it will be spread. The movies are DRM protected and will only play on the computer that downloads them. What is not mentioned in the news items however is how much it will cost. I hope the price will be considerably lower than purchasing the same movie in DVD format.
Technically services like Bit Torrent are just about perfect for distribution since they tend to scale with the number of viewers so that the more people download and view the movie the more sites there are to download from; the problem has always been the potential for piracy. However the Bit Torrent announcement appears to indicate that this problem may, at least partially, be licked.
